LIBRARY CONSTRUCTION HAS NOW BEEN COMPLETED

After a very long process of planning and hold ups the new Library at the Blackhall/Kalimna campus has becoming a reality. The project began on the last day of Term 2, Friday July 1 2011. Designed by Stephen O-Connor and Annick Houle, the construction was completed this Term March 2012. In the Annual Report in 2008 Vivien Millane, spoke of the new library which was, at that stage, no more than an idea. ‘…it will be a compelling, attractive building in the centre of the campus; a hub of learning, easily accessible, with flexible spaces. It will be richly resourced in books, information technology and multi-media. It will combine the role of the traditional library, with its culture of books, with the open-ended possibilities of the digital age.’

Having arrived at the school in time to oversee the completion of this dream I was mindful of the imagination, the anxieties and the sheer hard work which had preceded me and I pay tribute to all those others who have now seen their efforts rewarded with the completion of this terrific building.

This was a very exciting prospect for the school. It was the first new building for Preshil in a very long time and will herald the start of a long process of refurbishing the beautiful old buildings and spaces to provide for our students in the years ahead. One of our task was to minimise the potential disruption the building would inevitably cause and to make sure that the building ‘experience’ was a positive one for the whole of the Preshil community. There is no question that this was a rewarding success. We will have some photos of the Library in our gallery soon.
