MUG and the CENTENARY OF FEDERATION PEOPLESCAPE PROJECT

In 2001, a series of events took place across the nation in celebration of 100 years since Federation. The Peoplescape project was the final event for the year involving an outdoor installation of 5000 figures on the slopes of Parliament House and Federation Mall, each figure representing individuals who had significantly impacted the lives of others, their communities or the nation. Running over a two week period in late 2001, the exhibition consisted of life size cut outs of individuals who had been selected from those nominated across the country by family, friends and colleagues. One of these cut outs was of Margaret E Lyttle (Mug).

Those nominated came from every imaginable walk of life, both famous and unknown, from the past and present, and included local sports coaches, a town’s historian, bushrangers, diggers, community workers, entertainers, scientists and actors, amongst others.

A blockbuster concert featuring a range of well known celebrities opened the exhibition in celebration of the lives of these Australians due public recognition, presenting their stories through song, dance, music, performance and a series of tributes hosted by Hugh Jackman.

For the full story behind the project see the book, The Peoplescape ; Celebrating Australians by Michael McKernan (Author), Ros Casey (Editor), Andrew Hobbs and Cameron Major (Photographer), Geoffrey Blainey (Foreword)

The school is keen to obtain any recollections, stories or images of this event. If you have any memories of this project or your involvement in it, we would love to hear and document them for our archival record.
