Welcome to Melbournes most creative, encouraging and nurturing learning environment.

Welcome to Preshil
Introduction
Although Preshil has been in existence for over seventy-five years, its progressive, child-centred education remains essentially timeless, equipping the modern child to meet the challenges of a world with rapid change. Respect for the child and belief in the goodness of the child are powerful values incorporated into the everyday practices of the school. Founded in the early 1930s by Margaret J R Lyttle, Preshil aims to fit the curriculum to the child, rather than forcing the child to fit the curriculum. Preshil staff understand that children are all different and develop at different rates. Thus, at Preshil, the child is allowed to work at his or her level of cognitive and emotional development.
At Preshil we understand the importance of experiential learning. Children are encouraged to explore and experiment, to find their own meaning and to develop an independent voice. The journey towards self-actualisation begins in the Nursery School and the Fives (Prep Level) where play activities drive the process of learning. At Arlington (the Junior School), childhood is valued as a magical time in its own right, not just a preparation for Senior School. Through cubby building, play making and other open-ended activities, imagination grows, initiative is encouraged and skills develop in thinking, problem-solving, and organisation and planning. Children learn to cooperate, negotiate, resolve conflict and work in teams. As their abilities and confidence grow, they are enabled to move on to the challenges of middle school, and then to VCE, always encouraged by their teachers to think, challenge, question, initiate and create.
Preshil does not rely on externally imposed discipline. Within our traditional structures of learning, children are assisted towards self-discipline and self-directed learning. Preshil is concerned with the development of the whole person. At a time when the “business” of education demands large schools, Preshil deliberately remains small, creating a sense of family and community, as well as securing productive teacher-student relationships in all classes.
The Preshil master plan was endorsed by the Boroondara Council in December 2006. As we move towards 2009/2010 Preshil is embarking on an exciting period of physical development at the Senior Campus to provide additional space and teaching resources. As always, Preshil will retain its core values, philosophy and unique character, whilst embracing modern principles and practices that incorporate these values. Preshil seeks to equip its graduates as critical thinkers and creative spirits able to challenge and contribute to the twenty-first century
Yours Sincerely,
