Just a note that our Preshil students held their first Student Voice Conference on ‘Education in the 21st century’ was on August 16. They worked extremely hard and we wished them well. Throughout the day we will be Tweeting our questions as they come up in the discussions, so take a few minutes on Tuesday to jump on Twitter and respond to a few. All responses will be shown to the students on the day while the discussions are happening, so even if your school can’t be there, you can still participate! The hash-tag to use is #svau “.

We are a group of students from Preshil, The Margaret Lyttle Memorial School, in Kew, Melbourne Kew, Victoria, Australia. We are writing to inform you about ‘Student Voice’, a student-run education conference discussing education in the 21st century.

This event aims to gather together the views and opinions of students not only in Victoria and Australia, but around the globe. On the day students will discuss a series of questions regarding the role of education in the 21st Century. By the end of the day we will hopefully have comprehensive answers to be shared with schools around the state and maybe even the world.

We would like to invite a group of 5-10 students from your school to participate in this free forum. The event is being held on Tuesday 16th August 2011 from 10am to 2.30pm at the Hawthorn Town Hall, 360 Burwood Rd, Hawthorn. Victoria, Australia. We also invite students who are enthusiastic on any of our topics of discussion to present a keynote speech on the day. If you can’t make the day, we welcome your written or recorded thoughts on our questions, which we’ll display at the event.

The Aims of the Student Voice Conference:
• Bring students together to express their ideas about education
• Gather these ideas into a format that can be presented to schools, Education journals and University Education faculties.
• Have this created by, and involving, student voices only.

The topics for discussion:

Key Question:

What is the ideal 21st Century Education?

Sub-questions:

• Is it a school’s place to teach ethics, values, morals, confidence, self-esteem?
• What are the effects of a uniform National Curriculum?
• How can we make education more engaging?
• Should students be compared and ranked against each other?
• What is the place of social networking and new media technology in education?
• What is the best way to determine student knowledge?
